Arctic Getaway, Northern Lights & Unpredictable Weather Magic

Discover what autumn in Lofoten really feels like: from sudden rain and glowing rainbows to calm fjords, golden birch forests, and a spectacular Northern Lights performance.

Autumn in Lofoten

We escaped our daily routine in October — work, deadlines, and the usual city rhythm — for a short break far above the Arctic Circle. Cezar and I were craving time outdoors, the autumn colors, maybe a few hikes, and a chance to decompress after a very intense and packed period.

Together with Anca and Cătălin, we planned a return trip to Lofoten, hoping the weather would be kind enough to give us at least one night of Northern Lights.

Autumn in Lofoten is chaotic, but in the most beautiful way possible.

Before the trip, we obsessively checked the weather and solar activity, read everything we could about autumn conditions in Lofoten, and even looked up how many hours of daylight we were supposed to get. In theory, the research helps. In practice, Lofoten weather does whatever it wants. One moment the sky is covered in thick clouds, then it suddenly rains, then a rainbow appears, then it rains again, then the rain turns into snow, and a few minutes later everything clears up and the sun breaks through. It’s chaotic, but in the most beautiful way possible.

All of this creates a landscape that looks almost unreal: sharp peaks of rocky mountains on one side, pristine turquoise water on the other, distant ridges covered in fresh snow, fjords disappearing into the mist, and birch trees glowing in impossible shades of yellow and orange.

It’s one of the most spectacular autumn palettes I’ve ever seen.

One of the highlights for me was meeting Henning, with whom I’ve worked for almost five years. He happened to be in Lofoten at the same time, on his own photography adventure. Seeing him in person was such a nice surprise — and so were his photos. He captured some of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve seen in a long while. His passion for nature, wildlife, and the outdoors shows in every shot.

The weather was quite moody during our stay, but we didn’t mind. It was the perfect excuse to slow down, enjoy our cozy accommodation, eat good food, and spend quality time with our friends. We revisited some of our favorite places from the last trip and also discovered a few new ones.

And yes — we were lucky again with the Northern Lights. We got a full display: fast, intense, dancing across the entire sky with shapes and colors that no camera and no words can truly describe.

For me, there is nothing more magical than the night sky illuminated by the aurora.

After Lofoten we returned with our batteries fully recharged and spent a couple more days in Oslo. We also went to the Volbeat show at Unity Arena, where Cezar got a photo pass and took some amazing shots — he already posted a gallery from the event.

Needless to say, fall in Lofoten turned out just right – exactly the escape we’d been looking for.
